DIARY ONE - BEFORE THE STORM
This morning I woke up to the noise of Natalie crying. It was very early and unlike Natalie to be awake at this time. I went to her room to check what was the matter. When I got to her room I found that she was crying because she had woken up and could not get back to sleep. She told me that she had been scared the night before and had woken up scared once again. I told her that she was fine and then found the maid, Estelle and told her to fetch the food from the market. I then woke my wife and she began to make the preparations for breakfast. When Estelle got back from the market she helped my wife prepare the food. I went off to the docks and made sure that everything was alright there. When I returned home my son was awake and teasing Natalie. He was telling her that she was a little baby and she began to cry again. I scolded Marcus and took my daughter off to my wife who was almost finished with fixing breakfast. She then comforted Natalie and then took Marcus and her to wash before breakfast. The maid finished the preparations for breakfast and we all sat down to eat while she went off to wash the clothes. My wife told me that we would have to start giving Estelle more money for our food. When I asked why she told me that the prices of bread have been going up and that the amount we were giving her now is only enough for a small loaf of bread. I told her fine and when breakfast was done we told Estelle to send Marcus off to school. Today Anette stayed home with Natalie and began to teach her how to bake bread. I think that Natalie very much enjoyed watching my wife work on the bread and the fact that she was including her in this. I went off to the docks once again and on my way back I bought some wine at the market. On my way home I saw a poor man on the streets and suddenly felt bad that the church is not organizing a fundraising event anytime soon. I felt bad that I had enough money to buy some wine while he most likely did not have enough to pay his taxes. As I continued on home I remembered that tonight we had some guests coming over for dinner, Alexandre and Eloise, our friends from church. When I got home I found my son attempting to read one of my books and told him not to be silly and to run along to his room and wash up and change for dinner. The maid helped the children get ready as Anette began making dinner. I put the wine on the table and then when Estelle was done readying the children she finished preparing dinner. Anette and I sat in the main hall and waited for our guests while relaxing quietly. When Alexandre and Eloise arrived with their son, Laurence. We all sat down to dinner and conversed about many things. At one time I and Alexandre had a very deep discussion about the First and Second Estates. We decided that they did not care about anything other than themselves and that it was unfair that they did not acknowledge the bourgeois as a rising class. We talked about the fact that taxes were raising and that only the Third Estate had to pay. After dinner and lovely conversation and the children had been put to sleep my wife and I sat down in our room. I read and she sew. Anette is now telling me that it is getting far too late and that I should sleep now as tomorrow we must go to church. DIARY TWO - FROM CRISIS TO REVOLUTION
Today there is a dreadful storm. Today was also the day I was supposed to send my latest shipment out. And today was also exactly 2 weeks after the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was announced. So today was a big day for many. However the rain seemed to put an end to the plans everyone had. Not only was there rain, but there was thunder as well, it was a very big storm. Plans were canceled, children’s' schools canceled due to the fact that it was too dangerous out to get them too school, the market closed and I did not manage to send my ship out with the exported goods. The rain seemed to reflect on the mood of France for the past month. Everyone had been expecting something terrible. After the Tennis Court Oath everyone believed that the revolution was over, and that we could go back to our usual lives. However that was not the case at all. Right after the revolution had been supposedly done and finished the Great Fear comes along. Everyone was expecting the worst. They were expecting gangs, expecting to be robbed, and some expecting their lives to be over. However somehow everything seemed to calm down after the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was issued. Everyone, especially in the Third Estate felt a lot calmer and less jittery. Now that all men of France were equal it seemed that there was less to worry about. The fast change seemed to be reflected in the dreadful weather today. As yesterday it was sunny and warm out, and the weather suddenly changed. However if life is what the weather is going by I can only hope that it just gets better now. Even though the rain is harsh today and the storm slows some down and stops some all together I am very busy and have much to do. For example today I was meant to send a shipment to England, as I supply goods to them at times. Also today I was expecting the shipment for Natalie Fromage. She has a store in a city near mine and had just ordered a fabric shipment from Italy. I must tell her that due to the storm the shipment must not be able to get in to our dock and that she will just have to wait a bit longer. I do hope that nothing has happened to the ship, however I am very lucky and rarely ever lose a boat to a storm. Today I must also go to the sailors and ask about when the next soonest possible day it is to send off the shipment to Britain. I do not think that it will make much difference if I send it out today or tomorrow, but there may be a problem if I do not get it out within 3 days. It is almost midday and I still have not completed half the list of my things to do. I will not let the rain stop me, as I have got to work to support the family. So I must go now and make sure that the sailors will have everything prepared for the shipments.
DIARY THREE - THE REIGN OF TERROR My friend Alexandre has been taken away as a suspect by the Committee of Public Safety. The Committee should not be dedicated to ‘safety’. The committee knows not the word if the number of deaths is anything to go by. Anyways, Alexandre’s wife’s brother’s cousin was a sans culottes and was suspected of opposing the government and taken to trial. Some days later he and his family were taken away to the guillotine. Which obviously meant that anyone related to him was taken to trial as well. This eventually results in Alexandre and his family being suspects of being enemies of Liberty. I am worried for my friend and his family and truly hope that his trial goes all right. I am afraid to go see him or go near him. I am afraid that if anyone knows that we are friends that they will soon suspect me. I am afraid that they will see me and think, “Oh there is another enemy of liberty, and we must do away with him”. I am worried that these things will happen, for if they do I am sure that it will be the end for me and my family. I feel that I must protect my wife and my kids and stay away from people with relations to suspects or sans culottes. I know that most people are in the same situation as me, worried that they will be next. However I feel bad for the ones that know they will be the next. Everyone now is being executed. I cannot stand it anymore; everyone you see could possibly be one of the many next inline for the guillotine. Death is everywhere. Most cannot escape it. Death is not discriminating. It now does not care who it gets as long as it gets some one. It just wants to take more and more lives. I feel that soon no one will be able to escape it. And that soon after that, after the Committee of Public Safety gets hold of everyone there will be no one left but them selves. However that will not stop them, they will probably go against each other then, until existence is no longer reality. No class can escape the wrath of the committee. The nobles are captured by death, the peasants, the clergy, even the innocent. I feel that at least half the people I know will soon be taken away. I also feel that half the people that have all ready been taken away were innocent. In fact I suppose more than half the people were innocent. I fear that everyone around me is going to be taken away. I fear that they will not care who it is also. They could take away women, small children, priests! I fear that if that is true than it means that my wife’s friends are in danger. That the older children in my kids’ school are in danger. I fear that even the priest and the bishop, Monsieur Bagley, from my church will be taken away. I have never met the two, or had a long conversation with the two but they seem like good people. They are most likely innocent and have no reason to be taken away. In fact no one has had any reason to be taken away. Truthfully I do not think that this anything to do with protecting the country. I think that the people are instating this fear amongst us to keep us fighting, so that it still seems like it is the revolution. However, who is there left to fight, we no longer have the estates, we no longer have the king, and so what is there truly left to fight? I hope that tomorrow will be a better day. I think I will go pray now, for me and my family’s safety and for everyone else’s.
